The Ultimate Price For Being Poor: Exposure To Dangerous Chemicals And Other Life Threatening Industrial Pollution

Only if someone has struggled in life can one fully realize what it means to be poor, but once a person is fortunate enough to escape poverty, often they do not wish to remind themselves of the tough times.

But there are nearly 50 million people–men women, children, the elderly–who live in poverty, and besides lack of adequate housing, medical care, food supply, and lack of hope—also end up living in dangerous areas near chemical and other industrial plants, spewing forth poison in the air, soil and water supply, even with so called regulations of the Environmental Protection Agency, which faces constant attacks by Republicans and conservatives, who do not care about the life threatening effects of such industrial pollution on the poor who live nearby!

The story of the explosion at West, Texas is a good example of this, with a Governor, Rick Perry, who is against federal regulation and controls, and has advocated secession, showing no concern about the need for greater regulation and greater oversight, as Texas is a prime example of a state which every day shows its contempt for its poor, including refusing to expand Medicaid!

It is unconscionable for a state and a Governor to take such an immoral stand, and yet constantly invoke Jesus Christ in their utterances!

This is the ultimate indignity for the poor, to hear the pontificating of the politicians about Jesus Christ, and yet recognize they do not care one whit about the lives of 50 million people in any way, including the reality and the dangers of industrial pollution!

    Sad but true Professor.
I wanted to share something with all of you. I took a tour of a number of conservative blogs. Curious to see what they are calling us now. What struck me, not that I didn’t already know, is those people want only one thing, all Liberals dead! They want President Obama destroyed and then he and his family dead.
Look, we have massive differences but I do not want conservatives and or
Tparty folks dead. I also do not wish to use violent means to hurt them. I have never seen that kind of thinking expressed on this blog or any other Liberal blog for that manner.
True I would like to see a few Republicans sentenced to jail time in a court of law but I do not wish them tortured, shot, hung, billdozed into the ground, heads ripped off, acid thrown on them or all rounded up and exterminated. These are just a few of the kindly wishes for us.
I won’t even go into the offensive language, name calling and references to parts of the body and things coming out or going into body in order to cause severe bodily damage that I read in these blogs. All directed at us of course.
Saw some gun enthusists who particulary want a revolution just so they can shoot every last one of us. Wow they are scary! They don’t hold anything back! LOL! Not exactly sure it’s the second amendment they are most concerned about or just the ability for massive shooting of Liberals, African American, Latinos, Muslims, Gays, poor people, immigrants and just about anyone who disagrees with them and of course President Obama.
Anyone have anything to add? πŸ™‚

I cannot say that I am surprised by this, Maggie, but it greatly saddens and worries me. The right wing is indeed vicious, as they were with Joseph McCarthy’s time and the John Birch Society, and now the Tea Party Movement is the inheritor of those times, and, ironically, founded by the Koch Brothers, whose dad was involved in the founding of the John Birch Society, and they called Chief Justice Earl Warren and President Eisenhower Communists!

That is why we are in great danger of widespread bloodshed and violence, not only against Obama and other progressives, but also against any of us who speak the truth and condemn the hatred spewed forth by these right wing nuts! And crazy people having mass numbers of firearms insures that there will be other victims, simply because they believe in decency and compassion toward others, rather than the concept of take all one can, and to hell with everyone else. We have a lot of sick people in this nation, and they hate those who want to make America a better place for everyone, not just the top two percent! We live in a very difficult time!

You have hit the nail on the head Professor. The connection between the hate, racism, guns, intensified resentment egged on by Fox, Beck, Limbaugh, power greed, ignorance and more hate is going to destroy this nation unless the rest of us can turn it around.
And that is a discussion for another time.
