Newly minted Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump has destroyed any chance of a growing percentage of Mexican Americans and other Hispanic Americans voting Republican in 2016.
The issue of Hispanic immigration, whether legal or undocumented, is an issue that will NOT go away!
There may be eleven million undocumented immigrants in America, and in ideal terms, that should not be.
But there is no way that these eleven million immigrants, or any great percentage of them, are going to be deported, and it would be extreme injustice in many cases to do such a thing!
Many from Mexico and from elsewhere in Latin America, and also from Asia, came because of political and social turmoil; economic hard times; and desire to better one’s lives!
This is nothing new, as ALL immigrant groups throughout American history have come for the same reasons.
Yes, a small percentage of immigrants are criminal, and they need to be dealt with and be deported if undocumented.
But the vast number of immigrants, likely 98-99 percent just want a opportunity for a better life.
So Donald Trump, stating that people from Mexico are mostly drug dealers, rapists, and other kinds of criminals, is simply guaranteeing that no respectable Mexican American who is a citizen, or any other Hispanic American or Latino of any Latin nationality who is a citizen, will vote Republican. And more young Hispanics and Latinos will register in droves to fight against a party that promotes nativism and hate!
The Republican Party already has had a problem with nativism, but Donald Trump has made it worse!
And realize that Mexican Americans alone are the second largest ethnic group in America, with nearly 35 million people and 11 percent of the population, and with over 50 million total population from Latin America combined, with Mexican Americans being 64 percent of the total. German Americans are the largest, over 50 million.
And having Jeb Bush’s wife as Mexican American; or Ted Cruz or Marco Rubio being Cuban American (about 3.5 percent of all Hispanics), will not make up for what Trump has done!
The Republican Party is done, as far as the Hispanic-Latinos vote is concerned, and with that, the 2016 election! The Democrats are assured of winning the Presidency!
And as far as relations with our neighbor to the South, Mexico, and to claim a wall will be built and Mexico will pay for it, is Trump ready to start a war with our neighbor and act in an imperialistic manner? Does he think Mexico would just lie down and drop dead? The man is a maniac, a dangerous man, who could cause massive boundary issues, way beyond any we have have had with Mexico!
Donald Trump is a gift which keeps on giving.
Why do you put all “Hispanics” ( I really detest that term created by Nixon) in the same bandwagon? I personally find it unfair that people from Mexico (and to some extent central america) just because their country shares a border with the US they somehow believe they have the privilege of immigrating illegally to the US by just walking across the border. And what about the Brazilians, Peruvians, Colombians, Chileans, Argentine’s, Bolivians and not to mention every nation of Africa, the middle east, Europe, Eastern Europe and Asia who have to buy a plane ticket to get here and overstay their visa to be in the same condition as illegals from Mexico? And bear in mind that the poor from the countries that are not bordering us cannot just walk over here like the Mexicans. Usually those that overstay their visas are middle upper class. So you see this situation with Mexico, and their active government policy to promote illegal immigration to the US is highly unfair to the rest of the world that either doesn’t border our country or mostly likely is following the rules to get here legally. And what do they see with this amnesty push and open southern border policy? That they have been taken for a ride by the US government. I have friends from other countries that are doing things the right way and are waiting. They feel like idiots and tell me that it seems the US is now not any different than their countries. They thought the US respected the rule of law an apparently it doesn’t when it comes to illegal immigration. Quite the contrary, the US seems to want to reward the law breakers. If that is the case , then might as well stay in their countries. Why come here if it will end up being a third world country. All third world countries have the common characteristics; they do not respect the rule of law. If that is the future for the US, then we will just be like any other backward nation. In other words we will become what millions of legal immigrants are escaping from, a lawless country where those who follow the rules are taken for a ride and thus making law abiding citizens feel like idiots.
“Max” ‘s comment shows that nativism that the Professor mentions.
Absolutely, Princess Leia! It does not reflect well on him, as it is the same bigotry shown toward Irish, Italians, Jews, Poles, Chinese, Japanese, and every other group which has contributed to America.
And believe me, not all these immigrant groups all came legally, as there were many cases of “slipping through the borders” by people desperate to be in the “land of liberty and freedom” over the years.
So now according to an educated view of the left those of us who favor the rule of law are now nativist? I wasn’t really expecting such a rudimentary commentary.
So some in past “slipped through the border” may I ask how many millions per lets say 5 yrs? How many actually slipped through and during what time frame? Obviously context is important.
The DREAM Act is a sensible policy and it is an important step towards making our immigration system fairer, more efficient, and more just.

Max, are you aware that the numbers coming in from Mexico are way down for the past few years, due to better economic conditions in Mexico?
And those who were brought here when young, the DREAM ACT kids, should NOT be forced out with their parents, as long as they have not committed criminal acts, which 99 percent have not done, and instead have contributed to our economy and paid taxes.
Ronald, You are not answering the question I asked. How many millions ‘slipped through”? I for one find it completely unfair to rewards those who violated our laws. Specially when you have millions who are doing the correct, moral and legal way, that is respecting our laws.
Whatever they were, they are here and are not going anywhere.
Let us work on securing the border, and stop victimizing 99 percent who are not criminals, and just want a chance here. No way will large numbers be deported!
Do you remember what Eisenhower did? That said, I am all for securing the border first, and then deal with those here.
