The Democratic controlled House of Representatives has overwhelmingly passed a Washington DC statehood bill, the first time it has come up for a vote since 1993.
Only a handful of Republicans supported it, and it is clear why that is so. A slight percentage of residents in DC are African American, (47 percent) but whites are 45 percent of the population, and it is likely that a majority in DC in the future will be white, or that the population mix will be the most balanced of any part of the nation.
Right now, it is assured that if Washington DC became a state, it would have two Democratic Senators and one Democratic Congressman or woman.
But that should not be the issue regarding representation, and it only adds to the view that Republicans are unwilling to care about anything affecting African Americans, as they look more than ever as if they are Confederate sympathizers a century and a half after the Civil War.
Donald Trump spends more time defending Confederate statues and monuments than he does working on dealing with the Covid-19 Pandemic, which has killed more American in four months than in World War I, or in the Korean and Vietnam Wars combined.
DC has more population than Wyoming and Vermont, and not much behind Alaska and North Dakota, and it deserves to have proper representation for its citizens.
Hopefully, with a Democratic President and Democratic controlled Congress next year, we might see DC become a state!
Puerto Rico deserves statehood as well.
Yes, Princess Leia, if they vote for it!
Just what we need: Another State taking more money from the federal government than it pays into it. Just like DC [and PR and scores others] are doing now.
The National Debt Clock stood at $26,320+ Billion and counting just a moment ago.
Altho getting more Dems in Congress will make that whole process a lot easier for those inclined to operate that way.
And Puerto Rico doesn’t need Statehood; it needs independent sovereignty. Just like Alaska and Hawai’i do.
Seconded, Leia. Seconded, Professor. Ignore the stupid troll.
Yes, we are not about to make Alaska and Hawaii NON States lol!
All Americans should have representation in Congress, and voting power!
In addition to statehood for DC and Puerto Rico, get racist Andrew Jackson off the $20 and replace him with Harriet Tubman.
Totally second that, Pragmatic!
Lincoln Project got a new anti-Trump ad out.

Andrew Jackson was due to come off the $20 bill, but Trump and Treasury Secretary Mnuchin have delayed it until the mid 2020s or later, and it is clear why that is so!
Harriet Tubman will be on the $20 bill during this decade, and hopefully, sooner than a few years from now!

This is unimportant by comparison to the people needing an effective and meaningful bill from Congress—one that needs to be sweeping—that helps people during this coronavirus pandemic here in the United States.
District of Columbia—whether or not to make it a state—is not an issue that is on the mind of anyone who is suffering with COVID–19 and/or jobs losses.
We know enough about the score for how this Election 2020 is liable to play out. But, if this was so important—making District of Columbia a state—the congressional Democrats (and, of course, this is the U.S. House) would make it happen when their political party will have enough power. If we get an Election 2020 Democratic wave—pickups for U.S. President and U.S. Senate with obvious hold for U.S. House (which, at this point, is what I am generally predicting)—we will find out if the post-2020 Democratic U.S. House still feels this way as they say do about making District of Columbia a state.
John Roberts Just Dealt the Anti-Abortion Movement a Crushing Defeat
Surprisingly, he refused to vote for restricting women’s reproductive rights.

Good! Another defeat for Trump and his cult by SCOTUS! 🙂
You want any meaningful pandemic legislation, get rid of Moscow Mitch in November.

I did not know the Democrats winning back the United States House of Representatives, in the midterm elections of 2018, exempts them from having to serve the people. I guess that word “Representatives†has no meaning.
D, not sure what you mean, as the Democrats in the US House of Representatives have passed close to 300 bills, most of which are dead on arrival in the Republican controlled US Senate!
Please explain what you mean!
The Professor is correct. The Democrats in the House have passed hundreds of bills, all of which are very progressive, all of which Mitch McConnell kills in the Senate.
That’s why you need to change the Senate, so that progressive legislation will not be killed by Moscow Mitch.
Daily Kos, Huffington Post, Daily Beast, and many of the other progressive blogs listed here are constantly reporting about what Mitch McConnell has been doing. He angers me just as much as Trump, Pence, and the rest of the Republicans do.
