Franklin D. Roosevelt And Social Security

Imagining A Harry Truman-Donald Trump Meeting!

It has been 80 years since Harry Truman ascended to the Presidency upon the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt on April 12, 1945.

Truman stood up for the accomplishments of FDR’s New Deal, most notably Social Security and labor rights.

Truman also faced the challenge and threat of the Soviet Union, and by utilizing the Truman Doctrine, the Marshall Plan, the formation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and challenging successfully the Berlin Blockade of 1948-1949 with an Airlift, he upheld the promotion of democracy from the totalitarian threat of Joseph Stalin.

Truman was known for speaking his mind, and had the nickname “Give Them Hell Harry”, and could use salty language against those he saw as detrimental in their ideas and policies, including for example, Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin of the infamous “Red Scare” during Truman’s second term!

So try for a few minutes to think of what it would be like had Harry Truman had the opportunity to meet his “namesake”, meaning another future President whose last name had the first four letters shared—meaning Donald Trump!

The verbal confrontation and stern, glaring demeanor of Truman toward Trump would have been legion for the ages, as he would not be tolerant in any fashion of the personality, views, or actions of Donald Trump, which are diametrically opposite of Truman!

Truman would be very voluble and outspoken in the extreme and “give Trump hell”, as Truman did in his Presidential campaign of 1948.

And had, in theory, Truman had Trump as his opponent, he would have verbally “slaughtered” him nationwide, and put him back where he belongs, in obscurity as a totally failed President, who has been rated absolutely last in the American Political Science Association Poll that ranked Presidents in 2024!

Republicans’ War On Social Security (90 Years); On Medicare (60 Years); Affordable Care Act (15 Years)!

The Republican Party from the 1930s until now, the 2020s, has opposed and attempted to destroy the major successes of the Social Safety Net.

Social Security was adopted in 1935 under Democratic President Franklin D. Roosevelt, as part of the New Deal reform programs, which transformed the nation.

Medicare was adopted in 1965 under Democratic President Lyndon B. Johnson, followed my Medicaid in 1966, as part of the Great Society reform programs.

The Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare) was adopted under Democratic President Barack Obama in 2010, as part of his attempt to promote medical care availability for millions of people that had no medical coverage.

So for 90 years; 60 years; and 15 years, with some individual exceptions, the Republican Party’s aim has been, and remains under Donald Trump and Elon Musk today, that the Social Safety Net, that has worked so well, and is so humane, should be scuttled, with the aim being to enrich wealthy people through massive tax cuts.

The Republican Party is shameless, and reprehensible, as they have always been, but the battle by the Democratic Party and all decent people, must be to continue to fight to defend programs that in many European nations, are much better than ours!

Kamala Harris And Expansion Of Democratic Presidents’ Social Reforms

Democratic Presidents for the past century have cared about the welfare of Americans, and have been able to promote and expand Federal protections.

So in 1935, Franklin D. Roosevelt accomplished enactment of Social Security, which Republicans have, constantly, wished to cut back on or eliminate over the years.

So in 1965, Lyndon B. Johnson accomplished enactment of Medicare, and the following year, Medicaid, for the elderly, handicapped, and poor, which Republicans have, constantly, attempted to cut back or eliminate over the years.

So in 2010, Barack Obama accomplished enactment of the Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare), covering millions of Americans who had no health care coverage, which Republicans have, constantly, attempted to cut back or eliminate since then.

Republican Senator John McCain cast the decisive vote to prevent elimination of this legislation under Donald Trump’s Presidency in 2017.

Now in 2024, Democratic nominee Kamala Harris is proposing that Medicare be expanded to cover Home Health Care for those unable to perform activities of daily living or have a serious cognitive impairment such as Alzheimer’s Disease.

Also, her proposal would expand Medicare to include vision and hearing, and end estate recovery from those who have passed away after having services.

So once again, Democrats have demonstrated social welfare as a prime role of the federal government, and have promoted what most European democratic nations have long covered. If left to Republicans, they would wish to end all such programs, based on their historical opposition.
