Israel-Gaza War

The Passing Of Pope Francis A Loss For The World!

The passing of Pope Francis this morning at age 88 is a loss for the world, not just for Catholics or Christians, but for all mankind.

He was a promoter of compassion, empathy, decency, and unity for all people, including people of all religions, of no religion, the poor and marginalized, the people who were outside the mainstream, whether in their economic circumstances or their sexual orientations.

He was a visionary on climate change, and the plight of refugees escaping persecution, violence, and hoping for a better life.

He also called for peace and reconciliation regarding the Russia-Ukraine War and the Israel-Gaza War.

Pope Francis humanized the Catholic Church, and it is hoped, but not guaranteed, that his successor will continue to promote the progressive trend that he advocated and promoted in his 12 years as Pope.

Attack On Universities And Freedom Of Inquiry: Discrimination Against Foreign Students!

The Donald Trump Administration has declared war on freedom of inquiry on college and university campuses, and have arrested and plan to deport foreign students on visas who have expressed criticism of the Israel-Gaza War, which has killed over 50,000 Palestinians, a vast majority being women and children, NOT Hamas terrorists. The government is claiming that these students expressing their views are a threat to national security.

This author and blogger agrees that Hamas is a terrorist organization, responsible for the deaths of 1,200 Israelis on October 7, 2023, the greatest loss of Jewish lives since the Nazi Holocaust of World War II, which murdered close to 6 million Jews in Europe.

One can consider Hamas reprehensible, and consider the right of a strong response to that horrendous massacre nearly 18 months ago. But with the continued assault and lack of concern about the loss of innocent Palestinian lives with no sign of ending, the fact that people of conscience and principle might speak out or write against the continued tragedy, should not be grounds for arrest and deportation for expression of their freedom of speech.

If violence takes place, that is a different story, but there is no indication that foreign students who have been detained and sent to a Louisiana ICE Prison facility, have indeed been engaged in more than their constitutional rights to the First Amendment rights of freedom of speech, press, and assembly, with all who are living in the United States being entitled to such rights. The late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia had stated that such was the case.

The use of the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 had not been used since World War II, and has only been used three times in a situation of declarations of war, which is not the case presently.

So Secretary of State Marco Rubio has abused his power to order arrests based solely on the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 and the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952 during the Red Scare “McCarthyism” Era, and reinforced in updating of the law in 1988. Again, Scalia had so declared his belief that these laws went too far!

Trump’s Victimization Of Ethnic Groups–Haitians, Venezuelans, Palestinians, And More!

Donald Trump has been on a campaign to victimize various ethnic groups, most notably Haitians, Venezuelans, and Palestinians.

Trump claimed that Haitians were eating cats and dogs in Springfield, Ohio, during the 2024 Presidential campaign, asserting so in his debate with Kamala Harris.

Trump has ended Temporary Protected Status for Haitians, and for Venezuelans, and is promoting the myth that all Venezuelan immigrants are members of gangs or have committed criminal acts, a great distortion of the truth.

Now young Venezuelan men, many of whom are not gang members or criminals, have been deported by Immigration and Customs Enforcment (ICE) to the horrendous superprison in El Salvador, a nation with horrendous human rights violations.

The Israel-Gaza War has led to victimization of all Palestinians, and to the deportation of some, and a lack of concern by Donald Trump at the massive losses of women, children, the elderly, as Israel continues what is seen by many observers as a promotion of “ethnic cleansing”.

Those of us who are not Haitian, Venezuelan, or Palestinian, should not sit easily and think we are safe from loss of our civil rights, as really, all Americans who dissent at what is going on could, one day, face similar horrendous circumstances!

Civil Liberties Under Attack With Arrest Of Palestinian, Mahmoud Khalil, Activist From Columbia University!

Civil liberties are under attack in the Trump Presidency, and the recent arrest of Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University graduate student of Palestinian descent, is an alarm bell, as there is no justification for his arrest by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), and his detention in secret in a prison in Louisiana.

Khalil may have political viewpoints about the Israel-Gaza War that are unpopular and opposed by many American Jews and other supporters of Israel, but that is not justification for the move to deport, when he is here legally on a green card, a permanent resident card with the permission to work, and has not committed any felonies.

Khalil led student demonstrations last spring, but when did we declare there is no freedom of assembly, and freedom of speech, just because some of us may not agree with one’s viewpoints?

This was not the way that demonstrations at the University of Virginia in 2017 by white supremacists and Nazi sympathizers were treated, by Donald Trump!

Trump is acting like a dictator threatening all Americans’ rights to the First Amendment, and this case must be fought to restore the basic principles of the Bill of Rights.

This was abrogated by President John Adams in the 1790s, Woodrow Wilson during and after World War I, and Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War II, most infamously among our Presidents, and it is not a political or partisan view to oppose violations of the rights under the First Amendment to the Constitution!
