Speakership Of The House Of Representatives

The Republican Party Is In Free Fall! Time For “Coalition” House Of Representatives!

As we wake up on Wednesday January 4, the Republican Party in the House of Representatives is in free fall, a real danger to the stability of American government!

Only once since the Civil War has the House of Representatives faced the crisis it has now, a century ago, when it took 9 ballots to choose Frederick Gillett to be Speaker in 1923 in the 68th Congress.

It seems highly unlikely that Kevin McCarthy will become Speaker, as there is real animosity between him and most of the extremist right wing Freedom Caucus.

McCarthy making too many concessions to these “seditionists” will undermine his party and create a situation whereby nothing can be done, and it is an embarrasssment to the world at large to see this disaster continue to unfold!

It is time for a “coalition” House of Representatives, with a former Republican gaining the few “moderate” Republicans joining with Democrats to create a majority with some concessions to Democrats, and backing away from extremist demands of the Freedom Caucus, as the nation needs a House of Representatives who can truly “govern” in the national interest!

So some suggestions as to who could become Speaker for the next two years:

Former Congresswoman Liz Cheney of Wyoming
Former Congressman Adam Kinzinger of Illinois
Former Congressman and former Governor John Kasich of Ohio
Former Congressman Justin Amash of Michigan
Former Congressman Fred Upton of Michigan

The 118th Congress Opens: Prediction Of Worst Congress In Modern Times!

The 118th Congress has just been gaveled into session, and it seems clear that, at least in the House of Representatives, the nation is facing the worst two years of Congressional action in modern history!

After the very successful 117th Congress under President Joe Biden, while the Senate has one extra Democrat now (John Fetterman of Pennsylvania), the Republican takeover of the House of Representatives is on the way to disaster, as it now seems inevitable that the battle over whether Republican leader Kevin McCarthy of California is to become Speaker of the House is going to take multiple ballots for the first time in a century!

Frederick Gillett had to suffer through nine ballots before he was chosen to be Speaker in the 68th Congress, precisely a century ago!

There have been 14 Congresses that had a battle over who would be Speaker, all but 1923 being before the Civil War, with four being Congresses between 1847 and 1861; five being between 1819 and 1841; and four being between 1793 and 1811.

So this will be the 15th Congress out of 118 that has had this struggle over who would be Speaker.

The longest battles have been in the 34th Congress (1855-1857)—133 ballots; the 31st Congress (1849-1851)—63 ballots; the 36th Congress (1859-1861)—44 ballots; and the 16th Congress (1819-1821)—22 ballots.

As I write this mid afternoon, Kevin McCarthy has lost on the first and second ballots, and it seems as if this struggle for the Speakership will go on endlessly, and the feeling is that someone else, possibly Jim Jordan of Ohio, may end up as Speaker, even though he has supported McCarthy!

If such happens, the nation is is dangerous times, as Jordan was too close and supportive of Donald Trump, and has vehemently condemned the January 6 House investigation of the US Capitol Insurrection!

The Future Of The Republican House Majority In The 118th Congress

It is now two days until the first session of the 118th Congress, and there is, seemingly, total chaos in the small Republican majority in the House of Representatives, as to whether California Congressman Kevin McCarthy, who has wished to be be Speaker of the House since 2015, will actually be able to gain 218 votes from his caucus.

The gut feeling is that he will NOT be able to accomplish his goal, and this author and blogger senses that second ranking Republican Steve Scalise of Louisiana will become the alternative choice.

So we shall see what transpires on Tuesday or later! It will be a very tumultuous time!

Kevin McCarthy Remains In Limbo On Speakership Bid

California Congressman Kevin McCarthy, who has for years lusted for the Speakership of the House of Representatives, is now facing the reality that he may not be elected by the Republican caucus on opening day of the 118th Congress, January 3, 2023.

It seems more likely that second ranking Republican Steve Scalise of Louisiana may become the alternative choice, seemingly acceptable to all elements of the Republican Party in the House of Representatives.

It certainly seems clear that McCarthy, even if elected, may not survive the entire two year term of the 118th Congress!

Nancy Pelosi: The Difference Between John Boehner And Kevin McCarthy

This author and blogger was not very pleased with Speaker of the House John Boehner (2011-2015), but in retrospect, he was a much more decent person than the likely next Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy.

Boehner had disputes on policies with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, but he honored her on Thursday when the outgoing Speaker was honored with a ceremony and presentation of her official portrait for the US Capitol building.

Boehner said that the two had always been cordial to each other, while having policy differences, which is what should always be the case, and he teared up, something he was noted for as Speaker, a man who had feelings and emotions.

Meanwhile, Kevin McCarthy failed to show up, as he is fighting to please the most extremist right wing members of the Republican caucus, in his frantic attempt to become Speaker with 218 votes on Janury 3, 2023!

So having already been very nasty and unpleasant toward Pelosi all along, he had no grace to be diplomatic and tactful, a sign of the disaster coming when he, if he does, become Speaker.

It seems certain that he will be the worst Speaker of modern times, while Pelosi was the best Speaker of recent times.

And it seems certain that he will lose the confidence of his caucus, and will have a short, unsuccessful term as Speaker!

“Civil War” Likely Within Republican Caucus In House Of Representatives Over Kevin McCarthy Comments

With more revelations about Republicah House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and his phone calls after the January 6, 2021 US Capitol Insurrection being exposed, it seems ever more likely that IF the Republicans win control of the House of Representatives in the Midterm Congressional Elections of 2022, there will be open “civil war” over him becoming Speaker of the House!

It seems clear that the most right wing and seditionist oriented Republicans in the House Caucus will refuse to back Kevin McCarthy to be Speaker, so only if the Republicans gain a massive margin in the House races this fall, will McCarthy manage to be elected Speaker.

The thought of Kevin McCarthy being Speaker is a nightmare, as he has no principles, ethics, or morals, and is a massive liar who bends to the will of Donald Trump.

But the alternative choice could be an even more extremist member, such as Jim Jordan of Ohio, and that could lead to a major constitutional crisis, as such a Speaker would certainly wreak havoc on the House, and declare war on Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, the Democrats, and lead to likely revenge investigations of the member of the January 6 House Committee.

Somehow, the effort to keep a Democratic majority, even if it goes against history in midterm elections, is essential for the survival of the reputation of Congress and the stability of American democracy into the future!

Kevin McCarthy A Total Sycophant To Lawbreaker Donald Trump: Disqualifies Him For Speaker Of The House!

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has revealed himself as a a total sycophant to lawbreaker and criminal Donald Trump, and this should disqualify him to become Speaker of the House of Representatives!

McCarthy has accepted the Republican National Committee’s description of the horrors of the US Capitol January 6, 2021 Insurrection as “legitimate political discourse”, despite the reality of the death, injuries and destruction incurred that day by US Capitol Police dedicated to the protection of the pillar of American democracy, and all who work in that revered institution.

McCarthy has sold his soul for his ambition, and it will scar his name forever in history, sharing a last name already infamous with the demaogue of the Red Scare, Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin, not a relative, but forever condemned by all decent, sane people!

If the nation is so unfortunate that the Republican Party manages to win the majority for the 118th Congress, the likelihood is that despite McCarthy’s obsequiousness toward Trump, he will be challenged by others for the Speakership, who will feel that he is not obseqious enough. This includes Ohio Congressman Jim Jordan, who might very well face prosecution on his own, as if anything, he is more dangerous to American democracy and the rule of law than even Kevin McCarthy!

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, for all of his disgraceful public record, has taken a different tack and is NOT trying to dismiss the events of January 6, 2021, and has denounced the Republican National Committee statement of “legitimate political discourse”.

So Kevin McCarthy is going down a path of self destruction, and potentially, federal charges of undermining the Constitution of the United States!

Top 10 Political Stories Of 2015

As the year 2015 ends, we look back on the major political stories of this eventful year.

The ten major stories of the year are as follows:

The rise of Donald Trump, and the threat he represents to the Republican Party, the conservative movement, and to the American people in general. He is promoting a Fascist agenda, including nativism, racism, misogyny, and a belief spreading among white working class men that somehow he is the new Messiah, who will solve all of the problems brought about by the failings of the George W. Bush Administration.  These  include the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars, which fueled terrorism; and the Great Recession of 2008, which is still reverberating among those less educated and more suspect to demagoguery. And also, those who refuse to accept Barack Obama as a legitimate President find Donald Trump appealing.

The surprise appeal of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, who is gaining support among the millennial generation, and men and women under 45, who are more educated than average Americans, and find his democratic Socialist ideas appealing.  There is no question that the younger generation is much more liberal than other Americans, and this bodes well for the Democratic Party, if Hillary Clinton continues her move to the left, pushed that way by Sanders’ agenda.

The final acceptance of gay marriage and the advancement of gay rights on all fronts, including the rights of transgender people, but with much discrimination still evident by those who resist change.

The disappearance of John Boehner and the rise of Paul Ryan to the Speakership of the House of Representatives, and the issue of whether Ryan can be any more effective in dealing with the Tea Party Movement, which helped to bring Boehner to the point of resignation.

The growing racial tensions in the nation, due to increased examples of police abuse toward African American men, and even women, along with Latinos, and the growing militarization of law enforcement, a dangerous trend.

The rise of more domestic terrorism, including in Charleston, San Bernandino and elsewhere, some of it inspired by ISIL (ISIS), but also by right wing Christian extremism.

Barack Obama’s changed foreign policy, including opening up to Cuban diplomatic relations; making a deal with Iran’s government on nuclear weapons; attempts to cooperate with other nations to deal with Islamic terrorism, meaning ISIL (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria; and trying to work with a hostile Israeli government, led by Benjamin Netanyahu, who made life more difficult for Obama by openly consorting with Republicans over the President.

The growing impact of social issues on American politics, including not only gay rights and gay marriage, but also abortion, gun control, immigration reform, and climate change.  All of these controversies will impact politics in a dramatic fashion in 2016 and beyond.

The issue of individual rights to privacy, and the growing role of intelligence gathering and government snooping, including the Central Intelligence Agency, Federal Bureau of Investigation, National Security Agency, and other government agencies, who feel that they must intrude and investigate all social media and phones and computers, to protect us.  This is seen by many critics as a violation of our civil liberties.

The evident deterioration of the effectiveness and competence of the Secret Service, in its role as protector of the President and his family; the Vice President; the Speaker of the House of Representatives; and all Presidential candidates, as the Presidential Election year of 2016 awaits us.  The last thing we need is any incident that affects the health, safety, and lives of any of the candidates or the top leadership of government.  If such were to happen, it would undermine our whole political system and stability in massive ways!
